In the United States and Canada, it is a popular breed that always boasts the top class in the number of registered dogs. Due to its excellent observing ability and high ability to use, it is active as a dog that works in a wide range such as guide dogs, assistance dogs,

Labrador retrievers are classified as large dogs in Japan, but may also be classified as medium-sized dogs in Europe and the United States. The Japan Kennel Club (JKC), an organization that issues pedigree books in Japan, has an ideal height of 56 to 57 cm for males and 54 to 56 cm for females. There is no regulation on body weight, but most individuals weigh 25 to 35 kg, and the average weight is about 30 kg.

Hair

There are 3 coat colors and there may be a “medal” on the chest.

The ancestral dog, St. John’s Retriever, had only black coat, but after that, breeding led to the appearance of yellow and chocolate (liver) coats. Yellow is recognized from bright cream to red fox. The small white spots on the chest are commonly known as “medals.”

Personality

Discipline

Discipline that does not shake the owner

A Labrador retriever that is gentle, gentle and friendly to everyone. It can be safely kept even in homes with small children. It is a dog breed that is easy to train because it is smart and has high learning ability. Rather, it is important to be able to discipline the owner without shaking. Complimenting or not complimenting, scolding or not scolding for the same actions can be confusing.

stress

Relieve stress by playing with a ball or water

The Labrador Retriever is a hunting dog and requires a good amount of exercise. Lack of exercise is a cause of stress. Take a walk twice in the morning and evening for about 30 minutes to 1 hour each time. We also recommend playing with “bringing” balls and flying discs. I love playing in the water, so it’s a good idea to play in the pool in the garden in the summer.

Illness / injury that is easy to get

Tricuspid regurgitation

In this variety, the tricuspid valve that separates the right ventricle from the right atrium often causes congenital hypoplasia, which is known to be more likely. Symptoms include increased tiredness, coughing, and ascites.

Chronic hepatitis

Chronic hepatitis is a disease in which hepatocyte necrosis and inflammation occur and progress to cirrhosis, and in most cases the cause of inflammation is unknown.  jaundice may occur, and neurological symptoms may occur, leading to death. Early detection by regular diagnosis is recommended.

Gastric distension — gastric twist

It is a disease in which the stomach swells and twists due to the rapid storage of food, liquid, or gas. The twisted stomach affects blood flow and nerves, causing shock, and is a terrifying disease that can lead to rapid death if left untreated. Large, deep-chested breeds are more likely to develop and are more induced by exercising immediately after eating.

Urolithiasis (cystine)

Be aware that urolithiasis often causes cystitis and urethral obstruction. Symptoms such as hematuria, pollakiuria, and difficulty urinating appear. Cystine urolithiasis is a hereditary disease that develops at an early age and in adult dogs, with the Labrador Retriever being the former.

Laryngeal paralysis

Wheezing, which is exacerbated by agitation and exercise, is the main clinical sign, but in severe cases cyanosis and collapse due to dyspnea may occur.

vaginitis

Causes of vaginitis include bacterial infections, viral infections, tumors, and vaginal stunting, but most are caused by the entry of bacteria from the vulva into the vagina. Symptoms such as vaginal discharge from the vulva can be seen, but dogs often notice it when they care about the vulva and lick it. Large dogs such as Labrador Retrievers often have “pre-sexual vaginitis” in which pus comes out of the vagina before sexual maturity, in which case it recovers spontaneously with the first estrus and no treatment is required.

Retinal detachment

The retina, which is located inside the eyeball, is peeled off, resulting in poor eyesight. There are several causes of retinal detachment, but it is known that retinal detachment is likely to occur by shaking the head strongly when biting and swinging a toy.
